The station would be situated on a proposed future extension of the Westbury – Swindon TransWilts route that will run from Southampton to Oxford via Salisbury, Warminster, Westbury, Trowbridge, Melksham, Chippenham and Swindon.
Network Rail has prioritised the provision of intercity services on the Great Western main lines between Cardiff and Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington. As things stand, there are no medium-term prospects of running a stopping service between Bath Spa and Didcot Parkway. The provision of a new service calling at Corsham, Royal Wootton Bassett Parkway and Wantage Grove would require an additional pair of tracks between Wootton Bassett junction and Didcot Parkway, and increased platform capacity at Swindon.
A new station site East of Royal Wootton Bassett junction close to J16 of the M4 is proposed. The Parkway station would serve to relieve congestion to Swindon centre. The economic case, like Corsham’s, depends upon a stopping service. Although it could be served by an hourly TransWilts timetable. Line capacity is a significant issue to Swindon and beyond to Didcot – some significant infrastructure decisions will have to be made. The East-West rail connection is a long term possibility.
